The birth of Dino Top Hat

Teams have been formed and ideas have been shared, the Dino Top Hat game will be brought to life. For the course Fundamentals of Human Computer interaction at the KULeuven, we, Maarten Tegelaers, Joren Van den Brande and Wander Bavin, will be making a new casual game called "Dino Top Hat". It is a fun and fast-playing, highly addicting game where players try to beat levels and get highscores.

The Main Idea
The player will be controlling a dinosaur with a top hat. The dinosaur will be running through a constantly moving screen. There are four lanes on which the dinosaur can run, and the player can let the dinosaur switch lanes by tapping the left and right side of the screen. The goal of the game is to let your dinosaur evolve, by eating the smaller dinosaurs and avoiding the bigger ones it encounters on its run. Below is a simple drawing of how the game will look, to further illustrate our idea.

Users, technology and job
Since we are building a casual game, a few important factors should be considered. The game should be fun, simple, addicting and played in small time chunks.

Of course playing with a dinosaur might not be fun for everyone, we aim to target people between 12 and 40 years old. Those are also the majority of smartphone owners which will be our main focus, nonetheless shall players be able to play on their laptops or anything that can access a browser.

A good casual game needs to be simple, for that we only have 2 buttons that can be pressed to switch the dino lane. A highscore system will be available to keep players hooked even longer. We don't want players to play for 10 minutes before they can beat their previous highscores, so we will implement short levels with each their own achievements, highscores and awards.

Stay tuned for more!

  1. Nice, clear idea: well done!

Can you also blog about your experience with the brainstorm session: how did you come to this result? And how did other students react to the idea?
